Luxor: The Luxor Hotel
  • Tip Rating:
  • Hotels in Vegas are not only places to stay, but attractions. The Luxor Hotel is a giant Egyptian-style pyramid. Even I, a skeptic and self-proclaimed expert detector of cheesiness, had to admit that this place was pretty damn cool. To enter the hotel you walk through a giant Sphinx and are immediately greeted by fountains and ancient looking statues. Look up and you will see the inside of the pyramid and the neat elevators that travel on an angle to accomodate the hotel's structure. The sheer size of the building is awe inspiring.

Inside the Luxor is a to-scale reproduction of King Tut's tomb. For a small fee you can take a self-guided tour of this with a tape recording that you conrol. All of the artifacts have been recreated here exactly as they were found in the real tomb. It was a lot of fun as well as educational!

For families with kids the Luxor would also be a great place to go because they have an IMAX theatre as well as inexpensive and kid friendly food options such as Pizza Hut and Burger King.

Luxor: Luxor - The Black Glass Pyramid
  • Tip Rating:
  • Hotel Luxor is really spectacular sight. Behind the sphinx in the picture, you will find the central part of the hotel, being a black glass pyramid, with a bright lightbeam shooting up into the sky from the top. On the inside of the pyramid you find the casino, completely shaped in Egyptian style, with enormous pillars, statues, etc. The walkways of the hotelrooms give you a spectacular sight into this central area.

Located almost at the end of the strip, beside Mandalay Bay, the Luxor is shaped like a giant pyramid and is 30 stories high. The rooms are situated around the outside from top to bottom, with a gigantic open atrium inside.

The theme, of course, is Egyptian and the interior is very impressive with lots of palm trees and Egyptian motifs and statues dramatically lit.

There is almost a museum-like atmosphere here, and of all the grand "theme" hotels, we found this is one of the quieter ones on the strip. You probably won't spend much time here as there isn't a whole lot to see, but it is worthwhile.

Luxor: A little piece of Egypt at the Luxor
  • Tip Rating:
  • An Egyptian theme prevails at the Luxor. If you arrive by the free monorail from Mandalay Bay or the Excaliber, you will behold the giant Sphinx which guards the entrance to the shining black pyramid. But fear not, you can enter between the sphinx's legs to the casino and beyond. Inside you will find faithful reproductions of Egyptian hieroglyphs, Tutankhamaun's tomb and Cleopatra's Needle, alongside the slot machines and talking camels.

King Tut's Museum is open 9am to 11pm daily, not free.

Luxor: Luxor - What an Entrance!
  • Tip Rating:
  • It's bigger than the real thing - and the nose hasn't fallen off yet!

This hotel and casino is an amazing piece of architecture. The black pyramid is a real landmark and at night the light on top shines out towards the stars (aparently the airport had to move one of its runways as the light was too bright - I don't know if someone was having me on, but it wouldn't surprise me!).

Luxor: 4th Largest Pyramid in the World!
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Luxor is located on the southern end of the Las Vegas Strip, opposite the McCarran International Airport. The resort is flanked by the Mandalay Bay to the south and by the Excalibur to the north; all three are connected by free express and local trams. All three properties were built by Mandalay Resort Group. The building is a 30 story tall pyramid (fourth largest pyramid in the world!) that brings you into an Egyptian paradise with a mysterious air. Over the course of your stay, you will see awe-inspiring sights that will remain with you after you leave from your vacation. The Luxor Las Vegas is one of the well known hotel and casinos that help give Vegas such a shining reputation.
When the resort opened, it featured a more heavily Egyptian-themed interior, including a river that encircled the casino with a ferry that would carry guests to their inclinator core at the corners of the pyramid. According to the unofficial ghost story, the Nile River attraction was removed because guests kept seeing ghosts of the three workers killed during the Luxor's construction whenever the river passed through dark tunnels.
Luxor has a 120,000 square foot casino. This casino keeps with the Egyptian theme, while remaining one of the largest and most elegant casinos in Las Vegas. There are a wide variety of games available for play, which allows everyone to find something of interest to them.
Attractions include: The Tomb of Tutankhamun (This replica of the tomb discovered in 1922 by Howard Carter is a great sight to see if you are interested in the history and glamor of Egypt. It is open daily from 9 A.M. to 11 P.M. Admittance is $5); In Search of the Obelisk ( Considered one of the best motion simulator rides in Las Vegas, it is well worth the $7.50 to ride) In order to be able to ride this ride, you will need to be over 42 inches tall); Luxor IMAX (This 68 foot by 48 foot screen lets you see some of the most interesting shows on a huge screen that pulls you into the action. Admission fees to see the show is $9.95)

    Luxor: Luxor Amusement Area
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Luxor Amusement area is a great place to take the kids. There are 3-D movies, haunted mansion ride, an arcade, and other stuff to keep your kid occupied. Rides run from $5 to $10 dollars. There is also a nice museum featuring ancient Egypt.

Luxor: Hang out in a giant, glass pyramid
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Luxor is a pretty neat building to check out. I stayed there in 1994 and found the room to be comfortable and spacious.

During the holiday season, the interior was a mix of their standard Egyptian motif decorated with Christmas wreathes and such.
