This is a local custum in Catalonia and other parts of Spain.I found this nice "correfoc" walking by one quarter of the old town not far from Passeig de Gràcia.It consist in a group of people that celebrate some festivals on their neighborhood.They were carrying some fireworks and a small band was playing some nice music behind them, they walks for many streets of the quarter burning the fireworks,it is an amazing and very noisy event,but they have lots of fun. We saw some children in the Gothic Quarter performing a Sardona which is a traditional Catalonian Circle Dance dating back to the sixteenth century. The young girls were dressed in traditional costumes of red flared skirts and white tops. It was a wonderful experience to see some local culture and all because we were in the right place at the right time. The girls did a great job with their skilled dance steps which kept the crowd entertained. Leave a Comment

One more time. Probabily you knows there's a specyal relationship with the catalans and Spain. And one more time, what means this for a traveler? Well, i think the most impotant is that you know if you ask or say something about tipical spanish things, you can notice a face disagree. That is because you are talking with a person who idenitify him self like a "first catalan". Nevertheless, if you speak with a person who identify him self like a "first spanish", probabily he (or she) will be glad to speak about flamenco and toros and all other things. How to know? Look and guess. Surely you guess what i am, for instance. But don't worry, is very difficult that this becomes a problem. Also, in the cosmopolitan city of Barcelona, you can find a lot of people who doesn't care about this.
The public opinion says: 30% catalans feel only catalans, 20% more catalan the spanish, 25% so catalan the spanish, 20% more spanish then catalan and 5% only spanish. More or less. Only keep in mind the double way: Catalans feel proud to keep our culture, but sad for haven't state and international recognition.

The many buskers provide good entertainment in the many tourist areas of the city. Colourful people and usually good music will grab your attention. The buskers are a common site at the many bus stops on the tourist route, they know how to make money in crowded places = if you like what you hear toss a Euro in the bag as it is passed around the crowds. While walking through Sant Jaume Square there was a festival of Santa Eulalia and a band concert - lots of wooden seats were set out for the audience, but we watched from the sidelines for FREE. The band played lots of music from Broadway shows and from blockbuster movies my favourite was the theme from Star Wars - Magic - creating a perfect opportunity to see a local band playing excellent music on a sunny day. The Mediterranean is not only key to the industrial and commercial success of Barcelona, but for a city that depends heavily on tourism, the sea ports provide the perfect place for cruise ships from all over to dock. This allows for the influx of thousands of day trippers into the Barclona' s shops, restaurants, and sites.
An added benefit is that whenever you wish to take a cruise of the Mediterranean, you can look for cruises that include Barcelona if you ever wished to go back and visit again (or for the first time).
Can you make out the name on the boat? Look just above the sailboat, below the red smoke-stack. Yes!!! It's the famous Queen Mary 2. We saw it just a week before this picture was taken in New York City! How surprised where we to find it here! Leave a Comment

The Mediterranean Sea has been vital to the people of Barcelona for centuries. Today, it continues to serve such a key role in the city's economic prosperity. Situated on the sea, Barcelona has several sea ports linking manufacturers and industrialists from around the world with the shops and merchants of Barcelona (and vice-versa). Numerous container ships come to port daily, and just as many leave. I have no doubt that this port-city serves great economic value to the European Union as it would be a key connection for ships coming from places like Central and South America, Africa, and other Mediterranean countries.
While the ships aren't the most aesthetically pleasing objects to look at (same goes for the ports), you can understand the significance of their purpose there. Montjuïc covers the view from most of the city so you would only see it if you went to visit Montjuïc. For a city that depends so much on the sea for the success of it's industry, commerce, and tourism, Barcelona is very fortunate to have situated itself in such a great location. Leave a Comment

Women do often go topless on the beaches here it seemed pretty common, so for those of you who aren't used to it ( my fellow americans) just be aware, and don't stare because no one else does!!! I don't believe that this is an entirely Spanish tradition, I think that northern European women started this trend in the 60s when they came to Spain as tourists. At the time Spain was under rule by the authoritarian and very conservative leader Franco. The topless trend therefore must have gradually evolved over the years. Don't feel pressured to if you don't want to , and again no one stares. Leave a Comment

Visiting Park Guell, we encountered this group of people who has chosen the beautiful surroundings as a background for their wedding pictures. I am convinced that the late afternoon sun will add to the intimicy of their photo's.
