 | Vienna Excursions FROM Vienna Reviews | 1 - 10 of 23 | | On Saturday evening Petra and I found our way to Suedbahnhof and took the 18.50 'S' train (Suburban railway) to Bratislava. It takes about 1 hour to travel 60km to the former 'Pressburg' capital of Slovakia. Tickets cost 14E return and the last train to Vienna from Bratislava is 10.23pm. Remember you will need your passport as the police board the train checking passports there and back. You will also need to exchange your money into Slovakian Korun as the Euro is not accepted currency! (And it's best to try to think about these things before you begin your journey ;)) Leave a Comment

There are several train stations in Vienna, so you have to be careful that you are at the correct one for your certain city. Prague is a great example of this, as trains depart from two different stations depending on the departure time. Trains to and from Munich arrive and depart only from Wien Westbahnhof. There are many per day, making you wait no more than 1 hour for the next available train. Please check the website or a travel agent to confirm these times! Leave a Comment

May 2006 saw a new fast boat service operating between Vienna and Bratislava. Wisely we booked early, weeks before we left home. The boat only takes 100 passengers and is proving very popular - there were people turned away as we waited to board. If you want to spend the whole day in Bratislava, you'll need to catch the first boat in the morning - it goes at 8.30am and there's not another until 12.30pm. It's a really stable boat, you have no idea of how it's hiking along until you step outside onto the back deck. The scenery may not be as pretty along this stretch of the river as it is through the Wachau (the other direction from Vienna) but there's plenty to see - fishing huts along the bank, villages, a ruined castle, barges and other river traffic. Finally you arrive in Bratislava, passing under the Bridge of Slovak National Uprising and disembark, ready for your day in the city. Passports are checked as you board the boat and again as you leave but the formalities are brief. You'll need to check your own visa requirements depending on your nationality - as Australians we didn't need anything. Check the website here for timetables and fares. Booking online proved impossible, it just kept freezing us out so our travel agent handled the booking for us. The boat leaves from Schwedenplatz on the Donau Canal. We made the return journey by train. Trains run every hour until about 11 at night, and the fare is cheaper Bratislava to Vienna than the other way around. Leave a Comment

In summer, the hydrofoil runs between Vienna and Bratislava (and onto Budapest). The hydrofoil leaves from the Reichsbrücke (U1 Vorgartenstr.) and takes 90 minutes to get to Bratislava - including 15 mins going there or 30 mins coming back through a lock. The hydrofoil offers fine views through the Lobau passing by some fine small towns and taking you to the centre of Bratislava - it is about 500m from the harbour to Namestie Trg. It costs EUR 22 one way or EUR 34 return and gives you enough time to take in most of Bratislava. The same company also has other excursions on the river that are worth considering. I have done the trip 6 times and tend to go annually and get the train back. Leave a Comment

I travelled from Vienna to the small Hungarian town of Sopron by train in January 2006. The following information was correct as of that date: - At Vienna's Sudbahnhof, I was able to obtain a green timetable showing the trains to Sopron, Breclav and Znojmo. This was available free of charge from the passenger information desk; - There are dozens of daily trains from Sudbahnhof to Sopron....and dozens more from Wiener Neustadt to Sopron. Not all of the trains run each day, and not all of them stop at each stop on the route. Some of the trains from Sudbahnhof require you to change trains at Wiener Neustadt; - Trains operate on the following route: Wien Sudbahnhof - Wien Meidling - Wiener Neustadt - Ebenfurth - Sopron - On weekdays (Mon - Fri), early morning trains leave Wien Sudbahnhof at 04:38, 04:54 and 05:19, arriving at Sopron at 06:16, 06:26 and 07:02 respectively. There are then frequent trains throughout the day until the last train departs at 20:57, arriving at Sopron at 22:22; - On weekends, the earliest train doesn't depart from Wien Sudbahnhof until 06:19, arriving at Sopron at 07:26. Again, the last train departs at 20:57, arriving at Sopron at 22:22; - With no change of trains necessary, my journey took approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes and cost 10.50 Euros; - You proceed through Hungarian passport control at Sopron train station after disembarking the train. If memory serves correct, my passport was checked by Austrian officials while on board the train; - Sopron's train station lies at the southern end of the town, a 5 minute walk from Szechenyi Ter. The bus station lies to the north west of the town, some 20 minutes walk from the train station. Leave a Comment Theme: Train

The River Danube winds its way through Vienna and there are a number of river cruises available for sightseeing or longer journeys. For those who want to travel quickly Bratislava is 75 minutes away and Budapest is 4hrs 30mins by hydrofoil. There are slower cruises for those with more time to spare from the short river trip to 2 day trips Leave a Comment

The boarding station for most boat trips on the Danube is at Schwedenplatz which is on a tributary, or on the river itself at the Reichsbrücke. U-Bahn: U1,U4 Trams: 21, N Leave a Comment Theme: Ship/Boat

Extensive Mass Transit makes it easy to get to outer areas. The inner city is quite walkable. Take a boat excursion which is included on your Eurail pass out to Melk for a lovely day trip. Leave a Comment Theme: Train
