San Gimignano's old Rocca (fortress) sits west of Piazza del Duomo. Its construction was completed in the mid 14th century, and it was built on the existing town walls. In the 16th century most of the fortress was dismantled. Located just northwest of the city centre is the green oasis of Bute Park. This vast area of landscaped flower gardens, lawns and recreation grounds was once a part of the grounds of Cardiff Castle.
