  • The Egyptian pyramid one, blah-di-blah di blah....

I'll try and tell you something you don't already know.

Got conflicting advice about whether to go for a pyramid or tower room. Everyone you speak to will have their own unique opinion. Provided they tell you how they got the opinion, you should be intelligent enough to make up you own mind if they're worth listening to.

We stayed in the West Tower as we were told the rooms were refurbished only two years ago. Was expecting something quite cheap & tacky, but we were more than satisfied. Room was reasonably classy with full on view of the pyramid - mountain ranges peeked through a gap between the main buildings. Two huge double beds (so technically a room for 4, if you're into that sort of thing) and a bathroom you could have played badminton in.

Pool was a little disappointing - 3ft deep with floaty things, and my complimentary visit to the Spa was the shortest ever when I found out that instead of sharing a steam room with some topless revue girls, it was men-only and most were naked.

Also, the all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet is not the bargain most people make out. This is a classic tourist "rose-tinted glasses" case, and it cost us $25 (for two) for a very average quality breakfast (for food and most definitely service) - we were paying $35 to $40 in some of LA's top hotels and restaurants a couple of days earlier. Places that would make this spread look more at home in a motorway service station.

Was expecting this place to be pretty tacky, but it was surprisingly classy. For a major theme hotel on the strip, I doubt you will get a better deal than the Luxor. Obviously one of the reasons is that aside from the Mandalay Bay it is furthest south, but plentiful taxis (about $10 to the Bellagio) and the Monorail take care of that problem.

That said, if I came back, I would probably stay mid-strip in say the Paris or Venetian, and if we couldn't afford them, The Flamingo, just to be nearer the action.

If you're young and just want to party then look no further than The Hard Rock, or The Palms. Both a taxi ride from The Strip, but let's face it, even The Strip can be a taxi ride away from The Strip.

  • The Luxor is the hotel I stayed in most of the time with my son in 1998, and it stands out in many ways, though I haven't stayed there again, yet.
The location was great for someone with a 14 year old boy, who was totally impressed with the large and luxurious room, with a view of neighboring Excaliber.
Want to stay here again, maybe on the trip I promised my son for his 21st birthday (in April!)

We stayed in one of the Tower rooms, which aren't as popular as the Pyramid rooms, mostly because the ones in the pyramid part are accessed by a unique "inclinator" elevator, that goes up slant-wise.
However the Tower rooms are newer, larger and have a big, beautiful bathroom with a bathtub as well as a shower. Beds very, very comfortable.
The Luxor was a great place to stay with a teen, as it had a very nice arcade (at least at the time it did) with easy access to kid-friendly (at the time) places like Excaliber, NYNY (my son loved the magic shop and Coney Island arcade) and MGM.
The pool was nice, but there were no waterslides or anything fancy.
When we moved to lower echelon Gold Coast for the weekend, my son said, "I want our Luxor back."
I think our room price for the weekdays we stayed was about $79 a night. As all hotels, great variation in price depending on time of week, year, how book, etc.

  • Great hotel, great service!
Despite the huge crowd and all the hustle and bustle, checking in was easy. What a difference with Circus Circus, our previous hotel, where we spent only 1 night!

The center of the pyramid is the heart of the hotel: shops, a food court, a museum with "fake" Egyptian mummies and tombes, an Imax theatre and of course...the casino!

All the Egyptian themed rooms are on the side, just under the inclined walls of the pyramid and the view out of the window is spectacular! The photo shows how huge this pyramid is. The white rafters are in fact the indoor balconies of the different floors with the access to the rooms.

It's a giant pyramid with the world's brightest light shining out of the top. OK, there are rooms in the tower, too, but the pyramid is pretty cool. The rooms are actually fairly ordinary, but the rest of the hotel and casino is anything but! We found this to be one of the nicer looking casinos on the Strip and there is so much to see and do around the hotel you *could* spend your whole trip inside (but don't!).

The Luxor has a great pool area with 5 swimming pools, most with a whirlpool or two adjoining. Our room, on the west side of the pyramid, looked out over the pool (nice) and a parking structure (not so nice), and beyond to the mountains (very nice, especially at sunset). The Oasis Spa is a paradise and well worth some of your hard-earned (or won) money.

This picture is of the Attractions Level, where you'll find a few shops, the I-MAX theater, a huge video arcade, a food court, and -- due to be completed later in 2003 -- a wedding chapel.

  • Of our 6 visits to Vegas we have stayed 4 times in the Luxor so I guess you can say its our all time favourite. The second largest hotel in the US with over 4500 bedrooms, this is real value for money. The hotel has rooms in the main Pyramid, a black glass creation with a laser beam shining out of the pinnacle at night which they say can be seen in space, and two black glass towers, east and west . The atrium could hold nine 747 jets and is the biggest in the world. The hotel is nearing 12 years old and on our third visit we thought the rooms were looking tired, but on the fourth visit we were put on the 16th floor in the east tower and all the rooms and recently been refurbished and were excellent. The rooms are huge anyway but with new carpeting, drapes and furniture the whole place went back up in our expectations. A wide selection of restaurants to please everyones taste, and we have tried them all and been disappointed in none! Just love those slices of pizza up on the mezzanine floor! or the young waiter in the Isis restaurant whose job it was to offer slices of lemon or lime for your mineral water!

It really is breathtaking on first entry to this hotel. Huge obelisks and Egyptian mummies fill the Reception area and this is the only hotel with 45º slanting elevators. There are some amazing shops, with one selling real Egyptian artefacts where Michael Jackson was supposedly said to have spent 100s of 1000s of dollars.

  • The Luxor is an Egyptian themed hotel on the south end of the Strip. Its pretty easy to recognize with its pyramid structure and mammoth pharoah sculpture on the exterior.

The Luxor is the location for seeing the highly recommended Blue Man Group. As Vegas Strip hotels go, prices are on the more affordable end and rooms seemed pretty nice. I didn't end up staying here, but I looked into it and it seemed like a cool place to lodge for a couple of nights.

The lower level of the Luxor is its non-gambling entertainment center. Being a non-gambler, I enjoyed this area. There are several virtual rides, an IMAX theatre and a walk through exhibit of King Tut's Tomb which has some interesting artifacts (I'll explain more aboiut that one in a separate tip). On this lower level, you'll also find the Chapel at Luxor, should you have the urge to get married after experiencing the motion sickness of those rides or the opulence of King Tut.

Luxor has about a dozen restaurants, as every large Las Vegas Strip hotel is required to do, ranging from fairly pricey to inexpensive. The Pharoah's Pheast Buffet is another eating option.

The decor, in scale as well as design, the entertainment area and the elevators which are on an incline due to the strucure of the building

  • Even though we stayed next door at the Excalibur, this was our favorite place at the time. The exterior and interior was very well thought out...with Egyptian themes throughout the property. The light that comes out of the top of the Luxor can be seen from space!

This place is a must see while in Vegas. Check out the Pharoah's Pheast. I highly recommend it if you're staying at or near Luxor. It was definitely better than the Roundtable Buffet at Excalibur.

  • Great room, food and entertainment but its a really far walk to get to the main "strip". Especially on crowded hot weekends in the summer. I'd recommend a stay at a more central hotel. Aladdin is much closer and is very reasonably priced.

The sphinx, pyramid rooms, the escalator in the pyramid goes diaganally. Tram to mandalay bay and excaliber.

  • We stayed in one of the pyramid rooms with a view of Excalibur, New York, New York and Mandalay Bay. You couldnt ask for a better view! This was our first trip to Vegas and the Luxor was a great hotel!
We did notice that as soon as we left our room and headed downstairs, there was a certain "smell". Almost like an aromatherapy type smell that instantly woke us up.. Hmm are the rumors true? Do they pump oxygen in the casinos to keep you up? =)

Great Strip View from our pyramid room.. 25th floor!

  • WOW!

We stayed in a pyramind room. It was big and comfortable.

The casinos were huge and many free drinks given to us!!

The hotel has IMAX theatres, nightclub Ra which is awesome, and is very atmospheric in the Egyptian style.

The escalators go up the side of the pyramid.

There are 9 restaurants and one is in America's top ten restaurants.
