 | Rome Reviews | Tips 1 - 10 of 1103 | | I stayed at Hotel Margaret back in 1999. At tha time the rooms had just been renovated and I felt like I was staying in a much fancier place than a 2 star hotel. The room wasn't huge, but had a nice bathroom and all mod cons. The location is great - only about 10 mins walk from Rome Termini Station, and 10-15mins walk from most of the main attractions. The staff were friendly and we enjoyed our stay. Leave a Comment

 | | | | Hotel Delle Muse: A Green Surrounding
Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
The first thing I like about Hotel Delle Muse is they do not claim that they are in the city centre. Other hotels in Parioli will say they are "close to Villa Borghese, Trevi Fountain, and Termini" all at the same time. Hotel delle Muse is above that gimmick. The second thing I like about Hotel Delle Muse is that in the summer, their meals are served in the beautiful garden under shaded trees and rambling vine. It is a romantic setting if you dine as a couple and simply charming if you dine alone, but in case you do not like fresh air, the restaurant is a perfect substitute as well. The third thing I like about Hotel Delle Muse is their extended menu. There are à la carte, Chef's suggestion (fixed price), and vegetarian choices; that's enough options for everybody, I would say. The last thing I like about Hotel Delle Muse is all the stuff that matter to the travellers also matter to the hotel. Rooms are of a good size, beds are comfortable, bathrooms are all en-suite, and there are extras: satellite TV, phone, Internet, and modern elevator. The staff is very knowledgeable and ready to please. Is there anything that Hotel delle Muse doesn't have? Not a thing. They even have babysitters available. There it is, my hearty endorsement of a hotel that is not in the city centre. This is not a hotel for first or second time visitors, or for whom time is limited. If you don't belong to either category, and if you wish to walk out of your hotel room into one of the greenest and quietest neighbourhood in Rome, then this hotel is for you. Leave a Comment

 | | | | Hotel Scott House: Good Budget Hotel
Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
From my experience, Scott House is one of the best economical hotels in the city. It is a five-minute walk from Termini and is in the same building with a few other hotels and businesses. Neither of these two facts should be seen as a negative factor, unless one wants it to be so. Scott House is on the fourth and fifth floor, with a good-sized, well-functioning elevator. The rooms emit a warm feeling due to the ochre wall colour and the high ceilings. The bathrooms are also of good size and have new fixtures, except that the showers are still equipped with old-fashioned shallow bottoms. The beds are firm and comfortable, the linen crisp, and the towels absorbent and abundant. Rooms facing the street may not be a good choice if you are sensitive to the noise. However, we did not have any problem falling to sleep when we closed the double-paned windows. The day staff is accommodating, resourceful, and capable of multi-tasking. When the room given to us was a wrong size, she immediately traded it up to our benefit while at the same time very patiently explaining the rate and booking procedures to a rather difficult caller on the phone. Breakfast pastries are not homemade, but they're fresh and sufficient, and breakfast drinks are aplenty. The breakfast offering is a lot more and a lot better than many other budget hotels. Scott House's website shows a good rate, but you may be able to get a few Euro less booking through a third party. However, beware that cash is the only form of payment accepted at this hotel.
It cost us € 129 for a quadruple during Easter week (high season). The hotel gave away our room by mistake so they upgraded us to two double rooms for the same total price. Leave a Comment

Soggiorno Sunny is located inside a very large palazzo with a pretty courtyard. The street in front is large and busy, but once you walk through the gate and step on the premises, the noise stops and you find yourself in a very tranquil environment. This is true even for rooms that look down to the small street in the back. Rooms and bathrooms are of good size and everywhere in the hotel, cleanliness prevails. Hot water is abundant, beds are comfortable, linen is crisp, and the price is very low. Due to a very early departure, we skipped breakfast; hence, we cannot tell you about its quality or quantity. For the great deal that Soggiorno Sunny offers, there are two trades-offs. The first is a common one: the hotel only accepts cash for payment. The second is unique and may be a bit problematic for travellers who depend on hotel staff during the stay: Soggiorno Sunny is owned and operated by a Chinese family whose members speak only enough Italian to get by. Their English is even more rudimentary than their Italian if that could be possible. We live three hours north of Rome and go to the city very often, but rarely do we stay longer than a couple of days at a time. Much as we love Rome, the speed of a big city wears us out quickly. One September, we broke that rule and stayed for a week straight. A friend who has mobility problem asked for our help, so we came to be with her in her rental flat. It's a cosy place. The kitchenette and a sofa take up almost the entire downstairs. Beyond that is the bathroom with shower. The circular staircase leads to the bedroom with a large size bed and a wardrobe. The TV is bolted high above so as not to take up any precious room. A nightstand is on one side of the bed; bookshelves are on the other side. The window looks down to Via dei Chiavari and Largo Del Pallaro. We slept upstairs. It was perfectly fine in the September heat, with the window half-opened and the ceiling fan on. The door downstairs has a partial opening that our friend left open to bring in the breeze. There is also a portable electric heater for the winter. The kitchenette has folding table and chairs, refrigerator, cupboards, sink, and microwave; the stove has two burners and an oven. You can cook in and save, or step out the door and join the crowd at the famous Der Pallaro or at many other restaurants in the area. The location is probably the best selling point, with Campo dei Fiori around the corner and Piazza Navona and the Pantheon a few minutes away. The flat is ideal for two people, but in emergency situation, the foldout sofa can accommodate another person. However, I would not recommend three adults to share quarters that small unless you have no other choice. An apartment rental usually requires a minimum of one-week stay but there is always room for negotiation. For the price (€450 per week or so per week, everything included) and the best location, this is a deal that is hard to beat. Boccaccio is a small pension that somehow manages to be simultaneously close to and removed from the busy, touristy sights. Inside, there are eight rooms; every one of them is large and clean. Its floor and tables are full of houseplants. Its walls are covered with paintings and sketches, most are done by the owner/artist Patricia. Patricia doesn't see the pension as a business. It's her home and she maintains it with care. She also carries herself the way a school headmistress does. Although she relies on the aid of a walker, her proud straight back and shoulders emit a certain air that makes you feel the need to behave. (At least I did.) Patricia offers guests a comfortable and safe ambience, though it's not a fancy place and she doesn't provide breakfast. The pension is just around the corner from Via Del Tritone and Piazza Barberini, a short walk from all the sights. Leave a Comment

I like Hilton Hotels. Call me crazy if you want, but if I have to be in Rome for an early flight out of Fiumicino (Leonardo da Vinci), I would surely stay at Hilton and nowhere else. In fact, I have stayed there quite often. At Hilton Fiumicino, I would never have to worry about an early morning taxi, train or metro in order to get to the airport on time, since it would take me only six minutes to walk the distance from the hotel to the check in counter at Fiumicino. Hilton delivers the guaranteed comfort that I occasionally crave. The soft carpet under my feet, the shoe shine machine, the room spacious enough for two people to walk around without bumping into one another, the strong pressure shower in a spotless bathroom, the soft and large towels, the firm bed, the heater and air conditioner that work every time, the TV with CNN, the newspaper in the morning, the front desk that can answer every request, and the full breakfast at 5:30 AM. Those little things when put together have always helped to prepare my body for a long flight. People tell me that Hilton is a boring, corporate-owned American hotel chain. They ask why I would choose it when there are character hotels in the city. Perhaps Hilton is not for everyone, but for me, catching the plane out of Fiumicino in a leisurely manner is better done with Hilton than with any hotel in the city. A last night wandering around the city is not worth the comfort and the extra hours of good sleep that I would have at Hilton. Give me Hilton the night before a long flight and I will be fine, thank you.
-Directly linked to all terminals in Fiumicino via a skywalk and moving walkway. Time to walk to the aiport from the hotel: 10 minutes if you are a slow walker. -Even in American standard, the breakfast is enormous.
