We really wanted to stay in the Old Town area on our trip to Prague. I love to be in walking distance of the main sites and restaurants. But when I started researching accommodation I found that any of the hotels in the Old Town were either fully booked, or not very nice and too expensive for what you got.
So the next option was to rent a self contained apartment and I came across a UK based company with a selection of very reasonable priced options in the Old Town. We decided on one just a few minutes walk from the Old Town Square, close to Namesti Republiky.
Located on the 5th floor (with no elevator) the studio apartment was a loft style, with a couple of different levels. It was quite a unique space and there was plenty of room for us….and several of our friends too if we had invited them!
Bedding and towels were provided along with a fully fitted kitchen…not that we made any use of it.
We were met at the apartment late on the night we arrived by a friendly representative of the company we booked through. She ran us through the facilities handed over the key and then we were on our own. When we finished our holiday all that we had to do was sign the visitors book and leave the key in the letterbox on the way out.
We were really happy with the apartment. It was the perfect base for our time in Prague. The only negative would be that it was quite a climb to the 5th floor….so make sure you have minimal luggage.
And it you went up to the top of the loft and looked out the window you could even see the Castle!

 | |  |  | Ibis Praha Karlin Prague: The Plus And Minus Of A Good Hotel

We found many plusses and minuses during our stay at Ibis Karlin:
Plus: The hotel has the largest rooms of all Ibis hotels we have stayed in Europe. The double room has so much space between the bed and the wardrobe, the bed and the desk, and the bed and the window. Our room also has a small walkout balcony that overlooks the street.
Minus: The W.C. is separated from the bathroom the same way as in Accor's Novotel, a good idea on paper but poorly executed in real life. There is no fan in the tiny space located immediately next to the door; there is no space for a sink so one must walk around to the bathroom to wash one's hands. The towels are rough as sandpaper and there is only one bath towel per guest, no hand towels are provided.
Plus: I like Ibis' policy of 15-minute satisfaction contract. Charles was stuck in the elevator one evening, after frantically pushing all buttons; he finally got the staff to respond. They rescued him in less than five-minutes. Had they taken longer, we could have stayed free! :)
Minus: Breakfast at Ibis is a sad affair. The exact same breakfast but better quality that is complimentary in Best Western hotel is not included in the room rate at Ibis.
Plus: Ibis Karlin is located on a perfect location. It is away from the hubbub but not far from the main attractions. The hotel is five-minute walk away from Metro line B (yellow line). If you want to go to New Town, get off at the next stop, transfer to line C (green line) and stay for two more stops. If your destination is Prague Castle, transfer to line A and stay for three stops.
Minus: We checked in at 8PM, there was only one desk clerk who was rather curt although at the end of the procedure, she gave us a beautiful smile. There were more personnel in the day crew and all were more pleasant to us, however, on our last day there, we also observed a couple who arrived before check-in time being treated with dismissive replies.
The hotel has the best restaurant in the city and the price is among the least expensive. See La Table for more details. Leave a Comment

Hilton Prague is a beautiful and luxury hotel without the stuffy feeling that usually accompanies most beautiful and luxury hotels.
The double room has a king-size bed, a sitting area with a sofa and a coffee table, and a big closet with wooden hangers. The wall-sized window looks down onto the bright and green atrium.
As in most high-end European hotels, the bathroom and the W.C are separated, however, at Hilton Prague, it is not claustrophobically small as we have seen in other chains. The combination of tub/shower is deep and the water pressure is excellent. The amenities included two big fluffy bathrobes, soft bath sheets, and quality toiletry products.
The staff at all hotels in the Hilton chain is uniformly courteous, but at Hilton Prague, they are also pleasant and care about their guests.
The modern health and fitness center, the spectacular atrium, the comfortable bar and restaurant, the full-service shops, the alluring casino, the spacious lobby, the smooth-gliding glass-enclosed bullet-shaped elevator, everything in Hilton Prague is above the highest standard of expectation. This is truly a world-class hotel.

The first time we visited Prague in 2001, we stayed at this hotel, which is located in Prague 8, relatively close to Florenc metro station.
What can I say about this hotel? The rooms are very "basic" with a bed a cupboard and a TV. We went in November and the heating was not working...
Since I did not feel safe leaving the car on the street (foreign license plate) I rented a place in the garage.
If you look at the website, you are presented with an artist's impression (i.e., drawing) of what the hotel looks like instead of a photo... If you then select a language, you are presented with a very small photo taken from behind a tree showing ONLY the hotel building.
This is because the street looks quite bad, all buidlings were in bad shape and looked quite sad.
The service was very bad, everyone had a very angry face, I was almost scared of talking to them.
Check-in: The room was prepaid, but she could not find the fax from the trabel agency, so she did not want to give us the room... She finally found it and we got the keys. We were forced to leave our passports (all 4 of us!) which is actually illegal, if I am not mistaken...
At check-out, we left the rooms but wanted to go for a walk. The lady at the reception came storming screaming "YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR THE PHONECALLS". I just told her that we were not leaving and that she had both our passports and that my car was locked in their garage. She continued screaming and insisting, but after explaining the situation to her about 3 times, she finally got it.
Overall, the rooms are not very good, the location is far from perfect. There is a 10 minutes-walk to the metro station through a very unfriendly-looking neighbourhood (nothing happened to us, but...) and I checked the prices again when we went to Prague in 2004 and the rooms were 3 times more expensive. A double now costs 100 Eur!
Check my Hotel Florenc tip, it is located in the same neighbourhood, but right next to the metro station and with much friendlier staff.

On our first trip to Prague in 2002 we had already stayed in Florenc (in another hotel). It is not the nicest neighbourhood in Prague, but it is just one subway stop from Namesti Republiky and two from Mustek or Muzeum.
This time (August 2004) we decided to give Hotel Florenc a try. it is located 20 meters from the subway entrance and the room was very modest but clean and quite large (for european standards). There was a safe in the reception to store our valuables and the front-desk staff was very helpful, giving us useful travel information.
They can also arrange for taxis and anything else you might need. The guy we spoke to really knew his way around.
One thing to remember about the Czech Republic. Displayed prices are always the maximum you should pay, browsing around the internet or even negotiating at the Hotel will give you a good deal, not only on the room rate but also the taxi fare, etc. Prague is MUCH more expensive now than it was in 2002. Hostel Orlik offers quite decent accommodation for pretty low price. It is five floors building, of not so attractive exterior, but it was recently renovated, it is very tidy and rooms have its own private bathroom with shower and toilet.
It has very good connection to all parts of Prague as it is just 3 minutes walk far from Metro station Dejvicka. I had my doubts about this place, but I must say, I was pleasantly surprised. While not housed in one of those beautiful historic buildings (in fact, I think it was the only ugly building I saw in all of Prague), Novotel Praha City turned out to be excellent value for money.
The place is super clean (I saw maids polishing the railings and even the underside of a flight of stairs in the garden outside the breakfast room), with 2 non-smoking floors (if you want a room on these floors, book early) and 2 rooms for the disabled.
It has an attractive indoor pool (no charge for guests) with a wooden deck that is protected like some kind of family heirloom. You can't go inside the pool room with your shoes on, even for a peek. They give you special elasticized cloth coverings to put over your footwear!
The buffet breakfast included in the price was excellent, with a large variety to choose from, even for those who don't eat meat. Outside the dining room is a small carpeted children's play corner with a game machine and a bunch of toys.
Having said all these nice things, I found the service at the front desk below par. There was only one fellow who spoke passable English (and obviously, he wasn't always there), and the clerks went into a huddle every time I asked a simple question. Basically, the answer to all my questions was: "No, we not have this in Czech Republic." And I'm talking about things like a supermarket or a vegetarian restaurant....
We had actually asked for a hotel within walking distance of the Old Jewish Quarter. Well, it is walkable, but a much longer walk than we anticipated. We stayed at the Hilton Hotel, quite expensive hotel, but we had it as part of a package deal which included our flights and transfers from the airport etc, and got a good deal.
Its not as central as we would have wished though. Perhaps about a 20 minute walk into Wenceslas Square, although the metro was about 3 minutes walk away so we seemed to use that mostly.
Has a huge atrium when you enter the hotel, with all the bars, restaurants etc off from this central area.The photograph is taking from a balcony next to the lift looking down on the reception/bar/restaurant areas.
Bedrooms can either be an outside view or an atrium view.
Swimming pool, gym, ballroom, many conferance rooms, putting green, solarium, sauna, steam bath. Casino.

The name stands for The Three Violins.
We got exacty what we were told we would get with this accomodation! Clean basic and newly refurbished rooms.
The accomodation consists of a large bedroom with double and single beds in it as well as table and chairs and plenty of hanging and drawer space. A seperate kitchen. Shower room with sink and seperate toilet. the room is above a good restaurant and in a well lit and popular area of the city.
We were met outside by the ownes wife who is very pleasant and I cannot fault anything about the place.
Our room was directly above the 3 Violins sign.
